Are our abilities (in friendships and in all of life) “grow-able” and able to be improved on, or “fixed,” and predetermined? The excitement in believing that our personality can always develop and mature is called a Growth Mindset. The resignation that our abilities are already defined and allotted is called a Fixed Mindset. If one believes that her brain is a muscle that can exercise and grow, then her natural gifts are just a starting point that can be strengthened, improved upon, and enjoyed. If one believes that her abilities are “etched in stone,” she may find herself proving again and again what she can do… and being very aware of what she can’t. (The concept of Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset was created and developed by Dr. Carol Dweck of Stanford University.)
