Aheartless landowner once threw a family into a dank pit because they owed him a lot of rent. Slowly, the family learned to survive underground. They dug caves and subsisted on weeds. Years went by, more children were born, and soon there was a whole tribe living underground. Every year, a day of mourning was held to mark the day they were exiled. In the beginning, the whole family wept bitterly, as they all remembered normal life, but as the years went by, only the elders could truly mourn. The younger family members cried because they saw their grandparents crying, and listened in fascination to their tales of what life was like aboveground, but they couldn’t really envision it.
