historyHe lived in exciting times …

The excitement of having a rebuilt Beis HaMikdash was still fresh in everyone’s minds and hearts when Shimon HaTzaddik lived. People living then could still remember Achashveirosh, Esther, and Haman. Some of them had lived through the Purim story. During those early years of the Second Beis HaMikdash, the Persians ruled Eretz Yisrael and generally they let the Jews rule themselves.

He lived in dangerous times …

Shimon HaTzaddik also lived in dangerous times, times of change. The Greek leader Alexander the Great conquered the Persians. The Greeks became the rulers of Eretz Yisrael. Alexander decreed that the Kohein Gadol should be the head of government for the Jewish People. That Kohein Gadol was Shimon HaTzaddik.

During the 40 years that Shimon HaTzaddik was Kohein Gadol, great miracles happened in the Beis HaMikdash, and the Jews prospered greatly under his rule.
