old parchmentRabbi Yehudah HaNasi was born not long after the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. The Romans occupying Eretz Yisrael passed laws forbidding the study of Torah and the practice of mitzvos. Jews keeping the mitzvos risked being killed.

Until Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi’s times, Torah sheb’al peh, the Oral Torah, which was given to Moshe Rabbeinu, was passed down from rebbi to student by word of mouth. Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi, with his great wisdom and foresight, saw that because of the troubles and difficult times the Jews would face, the Oral Torah must be written down or it might, chas v’shalom, be forgotten.
