Zooming Around with Zeidy Zakon

Rabbi Nachman and Miriam Zakon

Shalom, Zeidy! Shalom, kinderlach. Where we going today? Look here, I’ll show you. See the map of Eretz Yisrael? I want you to call out the names of the places my fingers point to on the map. Moshav Mattisyahu. Maccabim. Modiin. Modiin Ilit – Kiryat Sefer. Zeidy … all these places are Chanukah names! That’s right. We are going to visit the Modiin area, where the story of Chanukah began. It’s only about a half-hour drive from Yerushalayim.

car in modiinDoes anybody know what happened in Modiin?

They found the oil for the Menorah?

No!

They invented latkes?

Nope!

When we get there I’ll tell you. Meanwhile, everyone into the jeep.

Zeidy, what’s that great smell coming from the kitchen?

Oy! I almost forgot. Those are Bubby’s special Chanukah cookies; she baked them just for the trip. Let’s go and choose which ones to take.

The chocolate-covered, menorah-shaped cookies.

Please, take a few of the chocolate chip dreidel ones.

Thanks, Bubby!

Now let’s get in the jeep and zoooom on to Modiin! First we drive through theBen-ShemenForest.

Shemen means oil.

Righto, give Leah a dreidel cookie.

Are we there yet?

Watch the signs.

Look! It saysKever of the Maccabim.”

Yup, we’re here. Everyone out. This is where some of the great tzaddikim who fought the Greeks are buried.
