Read the Fine Print

C.B. Gavant

In the past, you’ve read about the dedicated team of writers, editors, proofreaders, graphics artists, and illustrators who work hard to create a fun-filled issue for all you readers. But, how does the magazine get from the computers in the Mishpacha office to your home? In honor of Jr.’s 500th issue, let’s take a tour of Quad/Graphics, one of the companies responsible for turning a computer file into the printed, glossy magazine you’re holding in your hands — times 20,000!

Step 1: Quality Control

Every Sunday, the Mishpacha office in Yerushalayim sends its ready-for-print files to the Quad/Graphics plant inMichigan. It’s a long way to go! The files are already laid out, every page complete with text, graphics, and illustrations.

At Quad, the files are processed and then posted to an online approval system, so the staff in Yerushalayim can give the magazine one more look before plates are made. This usually happens Sunday morning,UStime. By Sunday afternoon, the files are approved and ready to roll.
