Blasting into the School Year

Rachel Stein

“How do summer months pass so fast when each day of school takes forever?” Chavie greeted Shiri when she settled into their car on the first day of school. The two families carpooled together, with Chavie’s mother driving in the morning and Shiri’s doing the afternoon shift. “When you figure out the answer, you’ll probably get a medal for uncovering one of life’s biggest mysteries,” Shiri retorted with a long sigh.

“Can you believe our luck?” Shiri arched an eyebrow and turned to look at Chavie. “We got the new teacher,Mrs.Yaffee. What if she’s mean?” “Or worse,” Chavie added. “She could be boring!” “The other class is so lucky. They gotMrs.Dubin; she’s the best!” Both girls frowned and stared straight ahead, feeling as though swarms of butterflies, or maybe they were birds, flapped and fluttered in their stomachs. “How about if you don’t worry about your new teacher until you see if there’s something to worry about?” Chavie’s mother,Mrs.Shinerman, suggested. “I’ve heard some nice things aboutMrs.Yaffee.”
