Nonny Bear and the School Trip

Yael Mermelstein

“We’re going on a trip, a great supreme fantastic trip, to Huckleberry Buckleberry Farms!” I was singing along with the rest of my friends from yeshivah as we packed up our book bags to go home for the day. Gavriel Farber closed the zipper on my bag. “Is the farm you’re going to tomorrow really called Huckleberry Buckleberry Farms?” Gavriel asked me.

I’m not the most farm-y type of kid. I don’t love horses or goats and I especially don’t like donkeys, if they have those. But I do love class trips. Being in the great outdoors always makes me feel free. “We’d better get home so we can pack you up for tomorrow,” Gavriel said. “Bye!” my friends called out to me as I raced TJ down the hall. “Tomorrow’s the big day!” everyone called out. Not that Huckleberry Farms was the best trip ever. It was so close to school we were taking a city bus to the farm instead of hiring a yellow school bus. “Cheap!”AshiZumer had cried out when he’d heard that. I didn’t mind. I liked city buses.
