Taking Turns

Surela

A dreidel is a dreidel is a dreidel, right? Four sides, four letters, a point on the bottom, and a stick on top? Not if you ask Rabbi Eliyahu and Mrs. Clary Safran. To them, a dreidel can be a toy, a history lesson, a work of art, a souvenir from an exotic land, a wine bottle, a necklace — or anything at all. Their hundreds of dreidels comprise a stupendous dreidel collection.

For a Chanukah treat, join Jr. on an exclusive tour of eights around this one-of-a-kind dreidel museum, right in the Safran’s Boro Park home. But before we “meet the dreidels,” let’s get acquainted with Rabbi and Mrs. Safran. How many dreidels are in your collection? Over 1,000! When did you start your collection? We began over 12 years ago. My wife and I both travel a lot, and we have friends who do a lot of traveling. So, with time, we gathered quite an unusual collection.
