Yosef Chaim Gives Directions

Shira Yehudit Djalilmand

“Excuse me! Can you tell me how to get to Abuhav Synagogue please?” “Sure! Straight down the alley and on your left!” “Do you know where the cheese factory is?” “Of course! Go down the steps to the bottom and it’s on the right!” I’m used to these kinds of conversations, they happen every day. We live right in the middle of Tzfat’s Old City, so tons of tourists pass by our house.

The only thing with Tzfat is that the street names are kind of complicated. There are so many little alleyways that most people don’t even know their names, if they even have one. (Although I suppose they must have, otherwise how would people get their mail?) And even the alleys that do have names are often called by letters, so you have Rechov Yud Alef, Yud Beit, Tet Zayin, things like that. And of course, there’s absolutely no logic to the naming, so, if you thought that Rechov Yud Alef would be next to Rechov Yud Beit, well, you’d be wrong! So, as you can imagine, asking directions in Tzfat by way of street names doesn’t always work.
