F is for Friendship

Ruchama Schnaidman

To tell you the truth, when Penina first told me why she was in a bad mood, I almost laughed out loud. No worries. I didn’t. I’m not that kind of friend who laughs when my friend is down. But, seriously, I couldn’t believe what she was telling me. I just couldn’t understand it at all. Like, not in a million years or 50 lifetimes. Not even if you promised me 180 ice cream cones if I tried to understand.

Penina just picked at some imaginary lint on her skirt. “Whatever,” she said. “I told you you wouldn’t understand.” Now that was true, too. When I’d asked Penina for the 50th time that afternoon why she looked so sad, she’d said I wouldn’t understand. “Of course I will,” I said. “I’m your best friend.” Then I begged and pleaded until finally she said, “Okay!” and then she told me why she was in a bad mood.
